Movie Review: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

With no Mets transactions to discuss, I thought I would provide discussion of another pastime of mine: Movies. I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night. I’d already heard the buzz surrounding the film and its all star cast.

The film depicts the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences:

After an odd 10-week pregnancy, Karen Powell gives birth to a healthy, seemingly normal baby boy. But this infant, Jack, is no ordinary child… As Jack grows up, his mental and emotional capabilities correspond with his age. But at the same time, his body is aging rapidly, so by the time Jack reaches his 10th birthday, he looks like a 40-year-old. This presents myriad challenges for Jack, particularly as he tries to fit in with the other kids — with mixed results. Shrewdly, Jack also uses his condition to his advantage, such as successfully buying a porno magazine, and attempting to date adult women. By the time he graduates from high school, Jack knows he doesn’t have much longer to live. But fortunately, he’s already crammed a lifetime of experiences in those seventeen years.

First off, kudos to Brad Pitt for his devotion to character. Like DeNiro’s Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull, Pitt gained 60 pounds for this role and, for some reason, grew a tremendous amount of body hair. Diane Lane was fantastic as the mother and superb supporting roles by J-Lo and Bill Cosby (Bill Cosby, WTF?) however Fran Drescher was unnecessary and took away from the film. Honestly, I don’t see where all the Oscar hype is coming from.

Bottom line, stay away from this film. The viewer walks away with the distinct impression they’ve seen this film twelve years ago and is likely why the film is already broadcast on basic cable channels.

Yes, but did they include the memorable and thrilling ninjas on motorcycles scene that was in the book?

Benjamin Button was very Fincher-esque… almost as good as his other stuff if not for some nagging plot holes
