Sandy Alderson has been selected by the New York Mets to be their new general manager, Sports Illustrated reported on its website late Tuesday night. Citing unidentified sources, SI said the team could announce the move as soon as Friday. Baseball writer Bill Shannon dies in NJ house fire (AP)

Bill Shannon, a baseball historian, author and an official scorer at New York Yankees and Mets games for decades, died in a house fire Tuesday. He was 69. The three-alarm fire was called in just before 9 a.m. and brought under control within an hour, West Caldwell fire chief Charlie Holden said. He identified Shannon as the only fatality.
