Bruce Bochy made no plans for October. He fully planned to be working. Instead, he will be busy in the coming days and weeks with player evaluations, sit-downs with his returning coaching staff, organizational meetings and a visit to the Arizona Fall League. The reigning World Series champions are headed home early this year after high hopes of another special postseason run.

Mets replaced as worst gaggers: A fan’s opinion (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

Well, it took only a few years to remove the ignominious tag of worst tank job in the history of baseball from the New York Mets. In 2007, the Mets blew a seven-game lead with 17 games to play. The 2011 Atlanta Braves blew an 8 1/2-game lead in September.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Jose Reyes became the first player in the New York Mets' half-century history to win a National League batting title, edging Milwaukee's Ryan Braun by five percentage points in a controversial finish Wednesday.

Mariners, Athletics to open season at Tokyo Dome (AP)

The Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics will open next season in Japan with a two-game series at the Tokyo Dome on March 28 and 29. Seattle and Oakland had been scheduled to play there in March 2003, but the series was scrapped because of the threat of war in Iraq. The A's will be the home team in both games, the MLB commissioner's office said Wednesday.

Reyes gets hit to boost average, quickly exits (AP)

Jose Reyes bunted for a base hit in the first inning to enhance his National League batting title chances, then was lifted for a pinch-runner as the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. The hit elevated Reyes' average to .337057 and gave him a 2 1/2-point lead over Ryan Braun, who was at .334525 heading into Milwaukee's regular-season finale against Pittsburgh.
