Mets get good news with loan, which means good news with payroll (Big League Stew)

The New York Mets biggest victory of 2014 has come long before opening day and happened nowhere near a Major League Baseball diamond. It has to do with a $250 million loan that owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz have hanging over them. The loan is going to be refinanced, which includes removal of restrictions on how much the team can add to payroll. They finally can see light at the end of the tunnel and it's not the No. 7 train. Mets partners were among a long list victimized by Bernie Madoff's ponzie scheme . Cash flow has been a problem ever since — with stopgap loans being required and many favors cashed in, putting current ownership in peril of losing the team. As a result, the team's payroll, about $140 million in 2010, is going to be about $93 million in 2014 — which would rank 24th out of 30 teams. The New York Post published details Thursday night about the loan refinancing that includes phrases one should never read in a baseball story. They include: "This will be oversubscribed," and "The rate will likely end up at Libor, plus 300 basis points." So Libor is one of the guys competing for the starting shortstop job, or? New York Mets: Was Johan Santana’s Contract Worth the Money? (Yahoo Contributor Network)

COMMENTARY | Johan Santana's time with the New York Mets was filled with injuries, but the southpaw was still on Sandy Alderson's radar as a free agent option heading into this winter. Now that New York has signed John Lannan and Daisuke Matsuzaka to minor league deals, any possibility of Santana returning to Flushing is likely done, according to Andy Martino of the NY Daily News. The organization hoped Santana would lead the Mets back into the playoffs to erase memories of their 2006 NL Championship Series loss and 2007 late-season collapse. The Mets once again missed the playoffs by a game in 2008, but it wasn't because of Santana.

Kubel, Bartlett begin Twins reunion (The Associated Press)

After joining Cleveland for the final month, Jason Kubel found himself in a familiar place in Minnesota when the Indians finished the regular season. During that series with the Twins, Kubel stopped in the home clubhouse to see some of his old teammates and coaches. Manager Ron Gardenhire got to the point. ''I said, 'Why aren't you in this clubhouse?''' Gardenhire recalled.

David Wright Continues Endearing Himself to New York Mets Fans (Yahoo Contributor Network)

COMMENTARY | David Wright never hesitates to talk about how hard the last five years have been with the New York Mets. This offseason has given Wright and Mets fans some hope for better days ahead. Sandy Alderson made his biggest moves since joining New York as general manager prior to the 2011 season, signing Curtis Granderson and Bartolo Colon to multi-year deals. While these moves give the Mets more punch than in years past, Wright knows there is still room for this roster to improve.

Matt Harvey was the world’s coolest baby — with photographic evidence (Big League Stew)

Matt Harvey has been collecting cool points with baseball fans ever since he debuted with the New York Mets on July 26, 2012. Within a year of that date, the 24-year-old right-hander began dating supermodel Anne Vyalitsyna , appeared in ESPN the Magazine's "Body Issue," and to cap it all off, started the All-Star game in his home ballpark, Citi Field. The only thing that could slow him down was a torn elbow ligament that required Tommy John surgery in October. But if Harvey has his way, he'll only add to his legend with a miraculous return to the mound in September . Should we doubt him? Probably not, because Matt Harvey has been exuding coolness and toughness since his days in diapers.

Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup (Reuters)

(The Sports Xchange) - Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander could miss the start of the season because of his recent core muscle surgery. The Tigers initially believed that Verlander would fully recover from the surgery by the start of spring training, but general manager Dave Dombrowski said the team is not ruling out the possibility he may not be ready when the season begins. Dombrowski told MLive.com Thursday that Verlander is uncertain to start the season on time. "He's doing great," Dombrowski said.
