Now with Blue Jays, Johan Santana aims for another comeback (The Associated Press)

When Johan Santana walked into the Blue Jays' clubhouse for the first time early Saturday morning, a surprise was waiting inside his locker. Taped in the upper left hand corner, directly above his blue No. 57 jersey and cap, was a photograph of the celebration from Santana's no-hitter with the New York Mets in June 2012, arguably the finest moment in his baseball career. ''I know exactly who did that,'' Santana said with a smile. For Santana, after two major surgeries on his throwing shoulder and a ruptured Achilles tendon he sustained with Baltimore during extended spring training last June, the picture served as an emotional reminder of his distinguished past.

A-Rod shifts across the infield and works out at first base (The Associated Press)

Stripped of his job at third base, Alex Rodriguez moved across the diamond and worked out at first base for the initial time with the New York Yankees. Asked whether he felt comfortable at first, Rodriguez said: ''Too quick to tell.'' ''I'm anxious to learn, though,'' he added. Yankees manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman say Chase Headley will be their starting third baseman and Rodriguez will compete for at-bats at designated hitter. Having Rodriguez get occasional playing time as Mark Teixeira's backup at first would give Girardi flexibility.

Catcher Travis d'Arnaud and manager Terry Collins sounded impressed by Harvey's accuracy and command.

Blue Jays sign LHP Johan Santana, hope for return to majors (The Associated Press)

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana to a minor league contract, hoping the former ace can make it back to the majors. The Blue Jays announced the deal Thursday and invited him to big league spring training. He last pitched in the majors in 2012 with the New York Mets and has undergone two operations on his left shoulder in recent years. Santana was in Baltimore's minor league system last year and tore his left Achilles tendon in June.

Murphy: Mets haven’t approached him about long-term deal (The Associated Press)

All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy said the New York Mets have not approached him about a long-term contract. ''No extension talks right now,'' Murphy said Thursday before the Mets' first full-squad workout. I have too much anxiety today to worry about what happens in November.'' Murphy made his first All-Star appearance last year, when he led the Mets in batting average (.289), hits (172), doubles (37) and runs (79). Dilson Herrera, a 20-year-old prospect who made his major league debut with the Mets in August, is a possible second baseman of the future for New York.

A’s players might want nametags for first full workout (The Associated Press)

The Oakland Athletics might want to use nametags for the first full squad workout of the spring Wednesday. ''Your team makes nine trades involving 27 players, that probably doesn't happen often,'' manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday. Melvin had a lot of young players pass through the revolving door when he managed the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005-09, but this is different in the sense that by comparison, the A's have more experience and therefore are more of a puzzle for Melvin to put together. First base will be the domain of Ike Davis and Billy Butler.

Spring training warms up players, winter-frazzled fans (Reuters)

The stirrings of baseball in sun-drenched Florida and Arizona provide light at the end of a frigid tunnel and an optimistic renewal that fosters hope of better days ahead. "It's a new beginning for all of us, each year," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters in Arizona on the joys of spring training. Many teams opened their coffers to restock rosters, notably the Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox who could change the MLB landscape.
