Mets hope to clinch playoff berth Saturday (The Associated Press)

Jay Bruce of the New York Mets is pretty confident right now. "I'm swinging at pitches I can hit," Bruce said after the Mets' 5-1 win in Philadelphia on Friday. Bruce homered for the third straight game and fourth in his last six, helping the Mets clinch at least a tiebreaker for the wild-card spot and ensure their season lasts past Sunday, the league's final regular season date.

Bruce, Gsellman move Mets closer to playoff spot, beat Phils (The Associated Press)

Jay Bruce and Robert Gsellman made scoreboard-watching irrelevant for the New York Mets. Bruce homered for the third straight game and drove in three runs, Gsellman threw six sharp innings and the Mets moved closer to securing a wild-card berth with a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. The Mets began the night atop the wild-card race, with San Francisco one game back and St. Louis two behind.

Rivalry renewed: Dodgers stand in Giants' way (The Associated Press)

The San Francisco Giants hoped the home-field advantage in the final three games of the regular season would work to their benefit in the race with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League West crown. San Francisco needs a series win -- perhaps even a sweep -- against Los Angeles in the three-game set that begins Friday night. Pirates out to spoil Cardinals' wild-card bid (The Associated Press)

Back in April when the season started, it was easy to expect the Pirates' season-ending trip to Busch Stadium meaning something for both Pittsburgh and the St. Louis Cardinals. Instead, all Pittsburgh can do when it closes the season is play the role of spoiler against a Cardinals team trying to make its sixth consecutive National League playoff appearance. St. Louis starts the Friday night series opener fresh off the year's most controversial win, a 4-3 decision Thursday night over the Cincinnati Reds that was decided by Yadier Molina's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Cueto wins 18th to keep Giants in thick of wild card race (The Associated Press)

Johnny Cueto pitched seven uneven innings for his 18th win and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 7-2 on Thursday night, setting up a wild race to the finish for the NL wild card. With three games left the Giants are one game behind the idle New York Mets and one game ahead of St. Louis. The Cardinals beat Cincinnati on Thursday.
