Mets happy to have Yoenis Cespedes back (The Associated Press)

When the Mets and Yoenis Cespedes agreed just after Thanksgiving to a $110 million, four-year contract, Mets fans rejoiced that the Cuban slugger was returning to Citi Field. ''He's a very friendly human being, easily approachable,'' said pitcher Jerry Blevins, who will play his fifth season with Cespedes. Cespedes' arm strength and home runs bring out the baseball fan in Blevins, who played three years with the 31-year-old outfielder in Oakland.

Royals hope Soria has a bounce-back season (The Associated Press)

Joakim Soria shouldn't have any issue with confidence, not with 202 career saves. Only two relievers, Nate Jones of the White Sox and Tyler Thornburg of the Red Sox, had more blown saves in the American League. ''When he was pitching good, he was down in the zone and his timing was on and the confidence was there,'' Royals bullpen coach Doug Henry said as the club prepared for its spring training opener Saturday against Texas.

Nutting: Pirates had 'step back' in '16, but talent is there (The Associated Press)

The Pittsburgh Pirates missed the playoffs last season for the first time in four years, but that won't cause chairman Bob Nutting to abandon the team's steady, build-from-within approach. ''We have not embraced, as many teams have, that you have to go in cycles and you have to commit to five years of a bad team in a rebuilding cycle,'' Nutting said Monday after addressing the team at spring training. ''We believe that by infusing talent into the organization at every level we can, every way that we can, we can create a sustained, competitive team.

Rockies' Story wants to show power surge was not fiction (The Associated Press)

For all Trevor Story accomplished in a record rookie season, his biggest takeaway is this: Slide feet first. A painful lesson and one that ended the Colorado Rockies shortstop's outstanding season in late July after he tore a ligament in his left thumb trying avoid a tag while reaching for second base . Before his injury, Story was making headlines for his improbable power surge to start his career, hitting two homers in his major league debut and seven in the opening week.

Captain David Wright likes Mets' character, clubhouse (The Associated Press)

As far as the kind of clubhouse that we have, I'll put our character guys that we have in there up against anybody,'' the 34-year-old third baseman said after a morning workout. The Mets have assembled a clubhouse full of players who have taken on leadership roles. Infielder Neil Walker emerged as a strong voice last season in his first year with the organization, speaking up and leading by example when Wright's season ended due to injury.

GM Alderson excited about Mets this spring (The Associated Press)

After watching his club go through all kinds of injury struggles last year yet make the postseason, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson improved the team by making a pair of major signings. To make the team better, he brought back outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and second baseman Neil Walker with the hope they will reproduce their power numbers, resulting in even more run production than 2016. After Cespedes turned down the Mets' qualifying offer, the club signed him to a four-year, $110 million contract.
