Rockies' Story wants to show power surge was not fiction (The Associated Press)

For all Trevor Story accomplished in a record rookie season, his biggest takeaway is this: Slide feet first. Captain David Wright likes Mets' character, clubhouse (The Associated Press)

As far as the kind of clubhouse that we have, I'll put our character guys that we have in there up against anybody,'' the 34-year-old third baseman said after a morning workout. The Mets have assembled a clubhouse full of players who have taken on leadership roles. Infielder Neil Walker emerged as a strong voice last season in his first year with the organization, speaking up and leading by example when Wright's season ended due to injury.

GM Alderson excited about Mets this spring (The Associated Press)

After watching his club go through all kinds of injury struggles last year yet make the postseason, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson improved the team by making a pair of major signings. To make the team better, he brought back outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and second baseman Neil Walker with the hope they will reproduce their power numbers, resulting in even more run production than 2016. After Cespedes turned down the Mets' qualifying offer, the club signed him to a four-year, $110 million contract.

Nationals 2B Murphy on Tebow's batting: 'The power is real' (The Associated Press)

No less an authority on hitting than last season's runner-up for NL MVP thinks Tim Tebow has some ability with a bat - he just needs more work. Washington Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy said Friday at spring training that he recently spent some time working on batting with Tebow, the Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback who now is pursuing a baseball career. Tebow is expected to be in minor league camp with the New York Mets next month.

Old starters among new faces as Braves remake rotation (The Associated Press)

The Atlanta Braves were ready to add some more experience to their starting rotation - and boy, did they succeed. Bartolo Colon, the 43-year-old right-hander whose longevity and jovial disposition have turned him into one of the game's fan favorites, joined Atlanta in November. Around the same time, the Braves acquired R.A. Dickey, the 42-year-old knuckleballer who is one of baseball's elder statesmen - but whose big league debut back in 2001 came four years after Colon's.

New York Mets to play exhibition game at West Point (The Associated Press)

The New York Mets are returning to West Point to play Army in an exhibition game for the first time in 33 years. The Mets announced Wednesday that the game will be held at Doubleday Field at Johnson Stadium on March 31 at 3 p.m. The contest will be the Mets' final exhibition game before the start of the 2017 season, which begins April 3 at Citi Field against the Atlanta Braves.
