The New York Mets may be lacking anything resembling hitting with a .257 average and .395 placing them at the bottom of the league for power hitting. The Mets have been force on the base paths as they try and squeeze out everything they can when they get on base.
The team is second in league in steals and has taken enough walks to raise their on base percentage to sixth in the National League. Shea Stadium is getting a look at old school baseball before players knew how to hit home runs in batches of more than 20 a season.
Jose Reyes is proving valuable as a hitter and a weapon on the base paths with a .294 average and 26 stolen bases. What is sad is that his batting average is the best of regularly player on the Mets who did not suffer a near season-ending concussion.
What is funny is that both teams in
Reyes stats probably will not earn him a spot to the All Star game across the city in Yankee Stadium, but his type of baseball is keeping the Mets within striking distance in the National League East.
It really is not much of a long shot. The Marlins are starting to show their age and the rush of youth has the team suddenly struggling. The Phillies have proven that they are for real, but they have not been playing as well as late.
This is why Major League Baseball’s season is so unpredictable. The season is long and things just happen. It is difficult to stay consistent for 162 games. Hopefully the Mets hitting stops being so inconsistent and turns around. I do not think we have a chance to make the World Series on Reyes legs alone.
