Mets Observations

It is hard not to compare Major League Baseball teams when you are in the same city, even though you should not. With so many similarities between the two teams in New York, though, it is hard not to. Both are playing their last season in the same ball park. Both have payrolls that dwarf any other clubs. Both have had tremendously disappointing starts after a lot of off season hype.

I was happy that at the very least the Mets and the Yankees were bad seasons. Then the Yankees go ahead and take 8 of 10 during interleague play. The Mets responded by firing the manager at 3 a.m. after a victory in Los Angeles to avoid a messy PR situation.

That back fired-much like their season so far- and the Mets front office looks like the coldest group of executives in Major League Baseball. So to recap, the Yankees started to win again and the Mets are entangled in a nightmare that has every single Mets fan hanging their head in shame.

Jon Stewart did a hilarious bit on it during the Daily Show and I think expressed the same flabbergasted sentiment that the rest of us are feeling. As a Mets fan I know we needed a change. David Wright is receiving no protection in the lineup and the pitching staff is running on to good starters and a closer with no games to save.

The second half of the season after the All Star game should be entertaining for either a run reminiscent of the ’69 Mets or the complete unraveling of a professional sports team before the nation’s eyes.

Either way the stoic Jerry Manuel is not likely to grimace or smile either way at Shea Stadium.
