Jim Fregosi Was One of a Kind (Yahoo Contributor Network)

COMMENTARY | The Los Angeles Angels lost their first outstanding player and their first championship manager a week ago, when Jim Fregosi died early on the morning of Feb. 14 after suffering a stroke in the Cayman Islands. Fregosi spent 53 years in professional baseball before he died in a Miami hospital at age 71. For the longest time, the name of Jim Fregosi was associated with the short end of the rather lopsided trade in which the Angels sent him to the New York Mets for Nolan Ryan after the 1971 season. In my own capacity as a reporter 20ish years ago, when Fregosi was managing the Philadelphia Phillies to the 1993 World Series, I asked him why clubs in those times were increasing their pitching staffs to 11 and, sometimes, 12 pitchers.

This is the dilemma the Philadelphia Phillies have coming into the 2014 season. As troublesome as things might appear when comparing this current Phillies team to others in recent years, their roster is still not the rubbish they had in the late-1990s. Optimists remain confident that the 2014 Phillies could legitimately compete for the division title. However, there are three teams that will stop the Phillies from winning the division.
