The New York Mets are bringing back banner day for the first time in 16 years, scheduling the event for May 27 before their game against the San Diego Padres. The payroll-cutting Mets, coming off their third straight losing season, held banner day from 1963-96 and are restoring it as part of their 50th anniversary celebration.

Mets sign catcher Rob Johnson to minor league deal (AP)

The New York Mets have agreed to a minor league contract with catcher Rob Johnson and invited him to spring training. The Mets announced the move Thursday. The 28-year-old Johnson batted .190 (34 for 179) with six doubles, one triple, a career-high three homers and 16 RBIs in 67 games for the San Diego Padres last season.

Mat Latos' numbers look nothing like they did last season when he led the San Diego Padres on a playoff chase that went to the final day of the season. Latos surrendered a three-run homer to David Wright and the New York Mets won their first series in San Diego in more than nine years with a 7-3 win over the Padres on Wednesday.

After hitting a big home run, David Wright faked out Cameron Maybin. Wright hit a three-run homer and Angel Pagan added three RBIs to lift the Mets to their first series in San Diego in more than nine years with a 7-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. Maybin was on second base when Logan Forsythe hit a hard grounder down the third base line with two outs.

New York’s Isringhausen notches 300th career save (AP)

Everybody with the New York Mets wanted to make a big deal about Jason Isringhausen's 300th career save except the pitcher himself. Isringhausen notched the milestone save with runners on second and third as the Mets beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 in 10 innings on Monday night. The save came after Scott Hairston drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice in the top of the inning.

Maybe this is the year the New York Mets finally win a series at Petco Park. Without benefit of a hit, the Mets scored in the 10th inning Monday night, then Jason Isringhausen secured the 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres in the series opener, earning his 300th career save.
