Niese carried his no-hit bid into the seventh at Citi Field, walking Dan Uggla on a borderline pitch before giving up Freddie Freeman's ground ball single through the right side of the infield. That effort came one day after the left-hander officially signed a five-year, $25.5 million contract extension with the Mets, potentially keeping him in New York through 2018.

The Mets are bullish on what Niese can do now that he has incorporated a developing changeup into his arsenal, complementing his four-seam fastball, cutter, sinker and signature curve.
